MOSCOW, April 17 (Reuters) – Kremlin critic Vladimir Kara-Murza was jailed for 25 years by a Moscow court on Monday, the harshest sentence of its kind since Russia invaded Ukraine, after being convicted of treason and other offences in a trial he said was politically-motivated.
Kara-Murza, 41, a father of three and an opposition politician who holds Russian and British passports, spoke out against President Vladimir Putin for years and successfully lobbied Western governments to impose sanctions on Russia and individual Russians for purported human rights violations.

44 Top Russian Players Write an Open Letter to Putin, Demanding “Stop the War”
Top Russian chess players released an open letter to Vladimir Putin, the president of the Russian Federation, in which they firmly opposed the war in Ukraine and showed support for the Ukrainian people.
GM Ian Nepomniachtchi, the most recent challenger for the world title, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk, the 12th Women’s World Champion and Director of ChesscomRU, GM Peter Svidler, an eight-time Russian champion, GM Andrey Esipenko, GM Daniil Dubov, and many others are among the signees.
The five Russian players who are currently competing in the FIDE Grand Prix in Belgrade are not included on the list of signees, while FIDE General Director GM Emil Sutovsky stated on Twitter that it is likely because to technical difficulties that Grand Prix players were unable to sign.
Particularly GM Alexander Grischuk and GM Nikita Vitiugov, the current Russian Champion, have previously expressed their adamant opposition to the conflict, with Grischuk making his remarks during a news conference after game one and Vitiugov making his on Twitter.
Unsurprisingly absent from the list of signatories is GM Sergey Karjakin, a current contender and previous World Championship 2016 Challenger, whose pro-war remarks prompted FIDE to launch an ethics investigation into his actions.
The Duma, the lower house of the Russian government, is also missing, as is former world champion GM Anatoly Karpov, who voted to recognize the independence of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.
Karpov and the other members who cast the same votes have received criticism from the EU.

“Chess teaches you to be responsible for your actions; each move is meaningful and a mistake can bring you to a fatal point of no return. This used to be a sport, but now the human lives, human rights and freedoms, human dignity, the present and the future of our countries are at stake.
“During these tragic days we are thinking of all the people caught in the midst of this frightful conflict. We share the pain of our Ukrainian colleagues and call for peace.”

Russians Rally Against Putin’s Conscription
The Kremlin’s proposal to mobilize hundreds of thousands of troops is encountering mounting opposition.
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to send 300,000 more men to war is meeting mounting internal opposition, as defiant rallies flare across cities and tens of thousands flee the country to avoid conscription.
More than 2,000 individuals have been detained for taking part in large-scale protests, highlighting the public’s outrage at the decision—and the dangers they are ready to take to avoid being deployed.
Protesters around the country yelled, “Send Putin to the trenches!”

RUSSIA SCHOOL SHOOTING: “IN HUMAN TERRORIST ATTACK?”
The death toll has increased to 17, including 11 children, when a man opened fire at his old school in central Russia on Monday, according to police.
The killing was the latest in a string of school shootings that have jolted Russia in recent years, and it occurred while the country was on edge over plans to mobilize tens of thousands of men to fight in Ukraine.
According to the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned the “inhuman terrorist assault” in the city of Izhevsk, adding that the gunman “probably belongs to a neo-fascist group.”
The shooter committed suicide after the shooting in the center city of Izhevsk.

Marina Ovsyannikova made headlines across the world after she interrupted a broadcast on Channel One, Russia’s largest state television station. The news anchor attempted to speak over Ovsyannikova, who made statements protesting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military attacks on Ukraine. Following her protest, Ovsyannikova’s name was uncovered by media outlets, who also found she worked at the station and had recorded a video message on social media earlier in the day denouncing the war.
